The Delta Shake & Shingle (DSS) site was a privately owned landfill consisting of approximately 2,000,000 m³ of demolition, land clearing and construction (DLC) waste. JJM worked with the site owner and project engineer to develop a remediation plan to relocate and consolidate the DLC waste in a new, contained landfill structure that could serve as a 5 Ha parking area for the owner’s use.
DLC waste was excavated and relocated to a new, prepared location on site, while utilizing construction methods and site planning to minimize the risk of igniting a fire in the waste material.
The prepared site included the installation of an impermeable liner (nearly 90,000 m² LLDPE liner installed) and leachate collection system. The leachate collection system installed directs the captured leachate into the sanitary sewer system for treatment and disposal. The system installed results in approximately 18,000 m³ of leachate being captured and diverted per year, keeping approximately 18,000,000 litres of leachate from seeping into groundwater, or flowing into Burns Bog or tributaries of the Fraser River.
