Front Street Utilities Relocation and Sewer Upgrade

Client:
Metro Vancouver
Location:
New Westminster, BC

JJM Construction Ltd. was awarded two contracts for the Front Street Utilities Relocation and the Front Street Sewer Upgrade by the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District. This involved the removal/abandonment of existing infrastructure, and relocation of other existing utilities, installation of one new pre-cast electrical chamber, two new lined concrete cast-in-place chambers approximately 7m x 6m x 3m in size, and a total of nearly 200m of 1650mm diameter lined concrete pipe and 1500mm diameter lined steel pipe, all at a busy intersection and designated truck route in New Westminster.

In order to complete the work, JJM was also responsible for shoring, excavation, dewatering, treatment of water, contaminated soil removal and disposal, and the installation, monitoring and maintenance of a sanitary sewer flow bypass system. JJM was responsible for developing and implementing traffic control plans that addressed the need to divert heavy truck traffic onto detour routes away from the project site, and to manage significant pedestrian traffic around and away from the construction zone. Site restoration required additional paving work in order to carry out the construction of new traffic islands in the main Front Street / Columbia Street intersection. This contract required close coordination with the City of New Westminster and with operational personnel from the GVS&DD.
