Collingwood Sanitary Trunk Sewer

Client:
Metro Vancouver
Location:
Vancouver, BC

This heavy civil project involved the removal and replacement of an aging sanitary sewer forcemain and subsequent paving restoration. The site was located in a very busy and high profile neighborhood in the City of Vancouver and required considerable engagement with the public. There was also a very limited footprint in which to conduct the work that included the installation of a large sewer by-pass.

Numerous unknown historical utility crossings were encountered requiring careful and methodical excavation, as well as the use of hydro-excavation to eliminate line strikes. Deep excavation in less than favorable ground conditions required extensive use of shoring devices to maintain stable excavation walls. Concrete manholes used Predl liners and pipe specific bells for seismic connection between manholes and PVC sewer pipe.

Additionally, JJM designed and installed a 5m3 per second sewage bypass pumping system to convey material over land approximately 1,000 m distance as the Capilano River has an average flow rate of 1m3 per second.
