Colwood Jetties Remediation

Client:
Public Works and Government Services Canada
Location:
Colwood, BC

JJM Construction Ltd. was the prime contractor for this anything but standard dredging and disposal job. Dredge material within the work site was contaminated with various chemicals of concern, debris, unexploded explosive ordinance (UXO) and munitions scrap (MS), as well as historically and archaeologically significant material.

We successfully dredged, dewatered and disposed of over 19,500 m3 of contaminated sediments, which was then replaced with 14,200 m3 of clean imported aggregates. The scope of work also included the removal and replacement of a jetty fendering structure. Technical challenges involved managing the implementation of complex technology for the sorting, screening and dewatering of materials to segregate suspected UXO, MS and historically and archaeologically significant material, as well as treatment of contaminated water generated during dredging activities.

JJM self-performed the contaminated sediment dredging activities, the result was an over-dredge tolerance of less than 5%.  Stringent water quality objectives were met during all dredging activities. The project was completed within schedule and under budget.
