Minette Substation Site Preparation

This project was the site preparation phase for the expansion of the existing Minette Substation, which was expanded by BC Hydro to service growing demand in the Kitimat area for the energy needs of the new LNG Canada facility. 

The scope of work consisted of the supply and installation of erosion sediment control measures, site dewatering and water treatment. JJM designed, installed, and removed a temporary sheet pile retaining wall; and designed and installed a permanent sheet pile retaining wall. Work also included:

  • 22,000m3 of sub-excavation of organic soil including peat for off-site disposal;
  • 14,000m3 of supply and placement of Granular B fill material for working pad;
  • supply and installation of 189,000m of wick drain and 5,750m of horizontal strip drain as was necessary to expedite settlement and to control an active aquifer;
  • supply and installation of more than 50,000m3 of preload and surcharge fill;
  • removal and disposal of surplus fill once site design conditions were achieved, and grade to final limits;
  • design and installation of temporary lock block retaining wall and;
  • construction of access roads, perimeter ditches, and drainage infrastructure.

During initial sub-excavation work it was necessary to address the presence of H2S gas which was done through training, monitoring, and modifying construction sequencing.
