Scour Protection For Port Mann Main – Fraser River Crossing

Client:
Greater Vancouver Water District
Location:
Richmond, BC

JJM Construction Ltd. completed repairs to the rock scour protection apron over the Port Mann water main at the Fraser River crossing. Long periods of high velocity flows damaged the rip rap and created a notable gouge in the river bed upriver of the original scour protection. Repairs were needed to protect the pipe and extend the life of the crossing.

Activities for the work included placement of rock on the riverbed over and adjacent to the water main and restoration of a 1.2 m thick apron extending over a 240 m long section of the pipe. The majority of the work was completed in deep water. Approximately 19,400 m³ of 300 mm rock scour protection was placed over a total area of approximately 16,200 m².

Since the installation had to be completed during winter months, challenges arose due to inclement weather. Ice on the Fraser River regularly passed through the project zone. However, JJM successfully completed the work without incident.
