South Surrey Interceptor – Johnston Road Section Advance Works

Client:
Metro Vancouver
Location:
Surrey, BC

JJM’s fourth contract for work on this key piece of infrastructure was for another phase of the South Surrey Interceptor Twinning Project. This contract was for the Johnston Road Section Advance Works – 14933 Colebrook Road and King George Boulevard crossing. The work consisted of the installation of nearly 500 metres of owner supplied 3050 mm diameter PVC-lined pre-cast concrete sewer pipe, approximately 75 metres of which was installed in an open-cut trench crossing of King George Boulevard, a major traffic artery in the city of Surrey.

Additionally, the project included placement of polystyrene panels (up to 3 metres in thickness) and lightweight pumice backfill in order to reduce ground pressures on the existing 1.4 x 1.7 metre concrete box sewer line that is the original South Surrey Interceptor.

This project presented challenges in terms of timing (the KGB crossing needed to be completed before traffic volumes increased significantly due to the September back-to-school period), difficult ground conditions, and coordination with other contractors and private property owners.
